Emma Mathis was born and raised in Spartanburg, SC. She is the only daughter of Blair and Jana Mathis and has three brothers: Doug (26), Sam (20), and Seth (17). Emma has been a member of Bethel United Methodist Church since birth and was very active in the church throughout her life. After her senior year of high school on a mission trip with her youth group, she recognized her call to ministry. She graduated from Anderson University in Anderson, SC in 2016, majoring in Christian Ministry with a concentration in Youth Ministry. During her time at Anderson, Emma served in a variety of ministry positions. She was a Camp Counselor at Camp Tekoa in Hendersonville, NC, was the summer youth intern at Mandarin United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, Fl for two summers, worked as an administrative assistant for Grace Church in Anderson, and served as a youth intern last summer at her home church in Spartanburg. Emma is currently a Master of Divinity student at Duke Divinity School and pursuing ordination as a deacon in the United Methodist Church. She hopes to continue her education after Duke and eventually teach theology at the collegiate level. Emma is very outgoing and enjoys interacting with people, singing, reading a good book, hiking, and is up for any new adventure! She is especially excited about being in Wilmington for the summer because she loves the beach. Emma can’t wait to see how God works this summer and is super pumped about serving alongside Philip and the rest of the community at The Anchor.
